Aerobatic RC Planes: Stunts in the Sky

Aerobatic RC planes can pull off some truly impressive moves. Here we cover everything you need to know about them.

Part of the guide: RC planes

It probably goes without saying what these planes are built for, although they’re considered among the hardest RC aircraft to fly.

That said, if you already have some experience flying RC planes, flying one of these won’t be hard at all. The difficulty lies in the aerobatics you want to perform with them, more than in flying the plane itself.

Features of aerobatic RC planes

The clear difference between these planes and the rest is their layout, especially where the wings sit relative to the fuselage. But what difference does that make in the air?

A trainer with its wings on top of the fuselage is built to give you one thing: stability. This makes it heavier at the bottom, so it always rights itself after a turn.

On aerobatic RC planes, the wings are usually mounted at the middle of the fuselage. That way the plane doesn’t feel bottom-heavy, so it has no tendency to roll one way or the other.

The wing design is different too: on RC trainer planes you’ll find a flat bottom on the wing, while the wings of aerobatic RC planes are symmetrical and rounded at the leading edge. Because of this, an aerobatic plane has no trouble flying upside down or in any attitude you want.

How do you fly an aerobatic RC plane?

For a pilot, the difference is obvious: a trainer flying inverted needs a lot of up-force to make up for the downward force its wings produce. An aerobatic plane doesn’t have that problem, at least in general terms.

The radio for these aircraft can also be a bit different, with features such as exponential (expo), which lets the pilot reduce control surface deflection around center stick while keeping full deflection at full stick travel. As a result, the plane doesn’t overreact to small stick movements.

Here’s a video where you can see how aerobatic planes perform their stunts in the air, so you get an idea of how much fun flying one of these special models can be.

Buying an aerobatic RC plane

As we mentioned, these RC aircraft take some experience flying remote-controlled planes. You’ll find all kinds of models and sizes, so the choice is up to you.

Now that you know these details, you can choose from the models in our online catalog at the top of this post.

When you select each one, you can check the details of the materials it’s made from, as well as where it comes from.

Thanks for visiting this post on aerobatic RC planes. We hope you found this information useful.
