RC Boats: Fun in the Palm of Your Hand!

RC Boats: Fun in the Palm of Your Hand!

It’s time to talk about RC boats. In this section we’ll tell you all about them and their different types, with gas and electric power as well as sail-driven ones. With them you can feel like the captain of a ship, just on a smaller scale.

You can start with one of the topic sections below, or keep reading this page for an introduction to the world of RC on the water.

What Is Model Boating?

Model boating covers all the scale models you can find that imitate, more or less closely, real speedboats, submarines or catamarans.

There are model ships made only for display, perhaps as decoration in your home. These models recreate full-size vessels very faithfully, and most of them are ships with some kind of history or iconic vessels, such as the Titanic, to give one example.

Then there are RC boats, which don’t necessarily look much like real boats; instead, they focus on how well they can be maneuvered remotely. Even though they can closely imitate real-life boats, their main purpose is entertainment.

As the name of our website suggests, we focus on this last category and give you useful information so you can get started in the hobby.

Scale RC Boats

The term radio-controlled boat covers many types, such as speedboats, small boats, submarines and catamarans. But they all share one feature: they’re remote-controlled models.

Although model boating includes highly realistic replicas, here we focus on the ones that can be driven remotely with an RC transmitter.

As we said, you’ll find a wide variety of models, sizes and prices, with different features included, so our mission is to give you as much information as possible to help you make the best choice, whatever your situation.

Another thing to keep in mind is where you’ll run your boat and what kind of water it has, because a boat for a lake is not the same as one for the ocean with salt water. A saltwater boat needs extra protection against corrosion.

Types of RC Boats

As we mentioned earlier, the world of RC boats is very broad, so below is a list of the most popular types, with a short introduction to each one.

RC Speedboats

RC speedboats are without a doubt the first thing that comes to mind when we think about this kind of vehicle. They’re the most common type and the one with the most models available on the model boat market.

Maybe at some point in your life you got the chance to drive one of these scale models, especially as a kid.

There are also advanced electric RC speedboats with brushless motors, which are mostly used for racing.

Then there are gas RC boats, which are basically models that run on nitro-type fuel. The fuel mix these models use is a little different from the one used in RC cars: it’s less “explosive” than the fuel used by nitro RC car engines.

On top of that, nitro boat engines are a bit larger than those of scale cars, giving you longer run times and more fun.

RC Submarines

Like RC boats, they offer plenty of fun and entertainment, but RC submarines do it under the water.

The hull of these submersible vehicles is watertight, so none of the internal components get damaged underwater. Still, we recommend checking each manufacturer’s specifications, because not every model can dive very deep.

RC Sailboats

RC sailboats move with the wind that fills their sails, which carries them around wherever you sail them, mainly in pools or lakes.

Inside, they only have servos, which steer the RC sailboat and which you control remotely.

Parts of an RC Speedboat

In this section we list the most important parts you’ll find in most RC boats, although some of them may be missing, such as the motor in RC sailboats.

RC Transmitter

Also known as the remote control, this is what you use to tell your boat where to go. They usually operate on the 2.4 GHz band, so you won’t have interference problems with other scale boats that may be on the water near you.

These transmitters can be stick or pistol-grip types with different functions. As a rule, they come with two channels: one controls the steering and the other the throttle of your boat.

RC Boat Motors

The most common choice for most boats is electric motors, brushed or brushless, because they’re simple to use and maintain, although more professional or racing models use nitro or other combustion engines.

Nitro boat engines need more maintenance, and you also need to know the exact fuel mix they use.

LiPo Batteries for RC Speedboats

These are the most recommended battery type for electric RC boats. They deliver much more power than conventional batteries, and they also last longer and are smaller.

Steering Servo

A typical RC speedboat has only one servo, which controls the rudder. Servos come in different sizes to fit every model of RC boat on the market.

Cooling System

Unlike RC cars or RC trucks, RC speedboats don’t have a ventilation system, because the hull is fully sealed to prevent leaks that could damage the internal parts.

That’s why they use a water cooling system: water is picked up through an intake, routed through the parts that need cooling and released again at the back. This system is very efficient and keeps your RC motor at the right temperature.

RC Boats for the Ocean

These boats are specially designed for large bodies of water such as the ocean, although you can also run them on large rivers and lakes.

A big space like the ocean lets you run the most powerful RC speedboats, with brushless electric motors or the well-known gas engines. Boats with less power and speed can get boring quickly, because there’s so much distance to cover.

But we promise that a high-speed RC speedboat is guaranteed fun.

Large open spaces also let you use bigger boats, which in turn have room for larger motors and batteries.

When you drive these RC boats on the ocean, be careful not to take them too far out, because once you lose sight of them you won’t be able to get them back. That’s why larger boats are recommended. This is where you can use giant RC boats, or larger-scale models.

Boats with a brushless electric motor are quieter than gas engines, so you can run them near other people without disturbing them.

Final Thoughts on RC Boats

You should choose RC boats because they offer a unique and exciting experience on the water. These scale models of real boats give you the chance to explore lakes, rivers and pools from a whole new perspective. Because they can sail and maneuver by remote control, RC boats offer fun and entertainment for all ages. They’re also a great option if you want to get started in model boating, since they’re easy to drive and control.

RC boats also encourage outdoor play and social interaction, as enthusiasts can enjoy races and competitions with friends and family.

On top of that, some models come equipped with extra features, such as LED lights and cameras, which add another dimension of excitement and creativity to the experience.

In short, choosing RC boats means diving into a world of fun and adventure on the water, bringing moments of joy and discovery as you sail across unknown waters from the comfort of the shore.
