A new nitro engine has a very tight fit between the piston and sleeve. Break-in means running the first few tanks in a controlled way, with a rich mixture and without pushing the engine to the limit, so the parts can seat. It’s the best investment of time you can make in your engine.

Every manufacturer has its own method. If your engine’s manual gives a different procedure, follow the manual.

What you need

  • Nitro fuel with the nitro percentage the manufacturer recommends.
  • A charged glow plug igniter. See glow plug igniter.
  • A new or healthy glow plug.
  • A clean, oiled air filter.
  • An infrared temperature gun is very handy for keeping an eye on temperature.

Before you start the engine

  1. Check the carburetor: many engines ship with the high-speed needle set rich from the factory. If you’ve moved it, return it to the setting given in the manual.
  2. Make sure the throttle closes properly at idle and that the brake works.
  3. Fill the tank and prime the engine.

Step by step

  1. Start the engine and let it warm up briefly. If it won’t start, go over how to start a nitro RC without a glow igniter for the basic tricks.
  2. First tank: drive gently, at half throttle, with short bursts of acceleration. You should see plenty of smoke from the exhaust: that’s a sign of a rich mixture.
  3. Let the engine cool for a few minutes between tanks to create heat cycles.
  4. Following tanks: gradually allow somewhat longer pulls, always with visible smoke, and lean the mixture in very small steps.
  5. By the end of the break-in, the engine should accelerate cleanly and hold a steady idle. Now you can do the final tune.

For fine-tuning the mixture, follow the guide on how to tune a nitro RC engine.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Running too lean during break-in: little smoke and lots of heat. It’s the fastest way to damage a new engine.
  • Idling for a long time with the car standing still: the engine doesn’t cool properly.
  • Full-throttle blasts in the first few tanks.
  • Forgetting after-run oil when you’re done: nitro fuel attracts moisture and rusts the bearing. You’ll find the full routine in nitro RC car maintenance.

Available on Amazon

If you need supplies, look for RC car nitro fuel and an infrared temperature gun to monitor engine temperature.

Frequently asked questions

How many tanks does a nitro engine break-in take?

It depends on the manufacturer, but four or five tanks with a rich mixture and gentle driving is a common figure. Always follow the procedure in your engine's manual.

What happens if I skip the break-in?

The piston and sleeve can wear unevenly and the engine can lose compression early. A proper break-in extends engine life and makes the engine easier to tune.

Can I break the engine in at idle, with the car standing still?

Many manufacturers advise against idling for long periods, because the engine doesn't cool well without moving air. The usual approach is to drive gently while varying the throttle.
