A brief history of Tamiya

Tamiya has been around since 1948, when founder Yoshio Tamiya began building wooden kits, launching the well-known RC brand that bears his name. The company was first called Tamiya Shoji & Co. and made scale models in the city of Shizuoka, in the Oshika district.

One of the first models to catch on quickly was a motorized tank with wooden parts and a tiny motor, which became known all over the world.

Sticking with scale military tanks, in the 1960s the company released its first plastic kits, such as the popular 1/35 scale German Panther tank. By the end of that decade, it had started selling highly accurate scale car models.

The range of models and kits kept growing until the company launched World War II–themed aircraft kits in 1/48 scale. It also began releasing models of the main ships of the Japanese navy.

The brand’s modern history

In 1983, Tamiya launched its solvent-based paints for scale models, and the following year it founded Tamiya Inc. Co., relaunching several of its classic models, this time as radio-controlled versions.

In the 1990s, the Japanese company expanded into the United States, China, the Philippines and Europe, and also opened new factories in Japan to keep up with market demand, with a focus on scale car models.

After 2000, the company released RC kits based on the original designs of the Panzer IV tanks. Today it is one of the best-known brands in the world of scale vehicle modeling.

What sets Tamiya RC products apart

Unlike other brands on the market, Tamiya focuses on giving customers the complete experience of building their car from scratch all the way to racing it.

The company’s track record rests on the fact that it has been making components since the 1940s, starting with its first wooden kits, and fully working remote-control models for more than 30 years.

Today it is still known for the high quality of its components and for how faithful its products are to the full-size vehicles.

On top of that, you’ll find a huge range of accessories and spare parts, since Tamiya is known worldwide. Wherever you are, it should be easy to find a part you need to modify your scale vehicle.

Advantages of Tamiya RC cars

This Japanese company offers different types of kits, from those for complete beginners to those for the most advanced drivers.

There are plastic RTR (ready-to-run) kits such as the TA05 and TB02 that are incredibly durable and great for new drivers. That means they can crash them without worrying too much, which is normal when you’re starting out in this hobby. They’re affordable models, which also makes them a great choice for a beginner.

The manuals that come with the kits include detailed instructions for assembling your RC car. They’ll help you not only build your RC car but also repair it, maintain it or replace any of its parts.

Another advantage of Tamiya kits is that parts can be swapped between models, since they’re compatible with one another. So if you have several models in your collection, you can reuse parts.

You won’t just find RC cars: there are also highly realistic trucks with matching trailers to make the experience even more complete. These are without a doubt some of the Japanese brand’s most sought-after products, because the realism is truly impressive. They faithfully replicate trucks from leading makers such as Mercedes-Benz and Scania, as well as the Grand Hauler.
