Gas and Nitro RC Boats: Pure Power on the Water

Everything you need to know about fuel-powered RC boats, plus how they compare with electric ones.

Part of the guide: RC boats

Here we’re dealing with the most powerful, fastest RC boats in a hobby that wins over more fans every day.

Fuel-powered RC boats deliver a huge dose of realism, closely mimicking full-size boats in a smaller package. In this guide, “gas” covers fuel-burning engines in general; most of the boats described here run nitro (glow) engines.

Gas and nitro RC boat models

Most fuel-powered RC boats are scale models of the most famous, award-winning catamarans from different kinds of racing.

Because they carry a powerful nitro engine, these scale boats are a bit more expensive than similar models with electric motors.

Their complex powerplant may not be what a newcomer to the hobby is looking for, so we recommend these boats for people who already have some experience with RC boats.

That’s not only because of the high speeds these boats can reach, but also because of everything you need to check before heading out to run them.

How are nitro RC boats built?

To house these powerful engines, the hulls of these RC boats are made of fiberglass, a very light and very strong material.

The engine has to be cooled, and a boat doesn’t get the airflow an RC car does. So on these boats the engine is cooled by a water-circulation system of tubing. Water is picked up at the front of the boat and pushed out the back once it has run through the system and cooled the nitro engine.

Inside, the servos, receiver and the rest of the boat’s electronics are waterproofed. That’s because the hull has a small opening on top to let some air inside to feed the engine, so the electronics are at risk of getting wet.

Nitro vs electric RC boats

The main difference between these two types of power is the price, with fuel-powered boats costing a bit more.

As we mentioned earlier, the extra complexity of tuning a nitro engine can be the deciding factor when choosing between one of these and a brushless boat.

The extra realism of a fuel-powered boat is a real treat, with the more authentic sound of these engines. Electric RC boats, on the other hand, are quieter, so you can run them almost anywhere without bothering other people.

Electric boats are ideal for adults and kids who are new to the hobby, while nitro boats are the favorite of experienced hobbyists.

Because a nitro engine needs extra air for its carburetor, the hulls have a small opening on top. The exhaust outlets sit at the back to get rid of the engine’s exhaust gases.

Fuel and accessories for your nitro RC boat

The fuel these RC boats use is similar to what RC cars run on, but unlike cars, boats use a milder blend, that is, one with less nitro. That’s because they don’t need to rev as high as RC cars do.

These boats carry a fuel tank inside to feed the nitro engine, so there has to be free space in the hull to fit it.

Nitro RC boats on video

Look up a video of a nitro RC catamaran and you’ll see all the internal parts that make it up, as well as the speeds it can reach on the water.

You’ll find plenty of similar videos of races and competitions for these boats.
